This event offers a space for transdisciplinary dialogue at the Municipal Archive of Esposende. The objective is to bring together diverse perspectives to address a central question: How can we become more resilient to water?
The gathering will feature plural views from local experts on the subject. The activity will offer a space for listening and participation: a space for collective and plural reflection and imagination, featuring invited local experts from various disciplines, focusing on the territory, relationships with water, collective resilience, future uncertainties and local flood memories.
This event is divided into three parts: plurality of experts reflections, the activity "Mapping Relationality (Anatomy of the Territory)", and the activity "Imagination and Natural Remedies", this is a methodology created by Seila Fernández Arconada that brings research and creation into how the dialogue takes place, which will be moderated to guide us.
Some perceptions tend to view flooding as an abstract disaster that must be managed exclusively through engineering responses, which often disconnects communities from their own resilience and sense of belonging to the territory. Far from causing alarm or promoting a "culture of fear," this gathering seeks to be a constructive and inspiring space. Looking into the past through the Archive, we aim to collectively reimagine "flood resilience" as an embodied natural cycle, moving from mere "water management" toward a genuine "relationship with water".
How do we move from "water management" to building a "relationship with water"?
Meeting topics:
- A transdisciplinary and pluralistic space addresses water uncertainties by integrating communities, disciplines, and institutions.
- Art could inspire collective sensibility for preparedness, informing the community with care and without alarmism to face risks and create actions together.
- Infrastructure and situated identity can guide management (co-existance), and the relationship with the territory, recognising natural elements as critical infrastructures vital for human life achored in situated knowledge.
- Remembering water memories through historical archives allows us to reclaim past knowledge to guide our future resilience.
- Building networks strengthens intergenerational and interdisciplinary connectivity. This space adds a seed to local efforts but also could be the beginning of a collective network, similar to those that already exist in other territories.

The event "Water Echoes: From storm memories to community resilience" is a collaboration with the Municipal Archive of Esposende aimed at creating a space for dialogue that can extend beyond this gathering, through careful organisation by Seila Fernández Arconada, Dr Ana Isabel Lopes, and Dr Marília Capitão, who have invited various experts to participate in this meeting. Special thanks to everyone interested in giving voice to the different perspectives of the territory.
This initiative is part of the project "O Fio da Água: Embracing Water's Flow for Resilient Futures", led by Seila Fernández Arconada in partnership with Rio Neiva – Environmental NGO, selected for the European project S+T+ARTS AQUA MOTION.
