Mirage (2011, still in progress)
Collaboration with a soprano singer, Vanessa Saenz.
This project based on the rules of composition will be presented as a performance in a cave. A 12 km long cavity with special acoustic properties that generates echo disappearing on the distance. A phenomenon that adds more layers to the song previously composed. The voice takes directions in the space without any control. Confusion inundates the space and the position of the listener has a specific sound composition. This cave has a natural water system which floods the cave in certain periods of the year, acting as a soundtrack for the female voice.
In order to capture this atmosphere the performance is recorded with 10 different microphones simultaneously located in different places of the cave, trying to record a similar atmosphere. However, this event can’t be accurately reproduced because of its technological nature, editing even more the sound composition before its presentation to the audience. In addition, the space where the installation with the speakers are presented and the quality of those speakers are the last stage of the sound composition that will be completely different in each of the steps.
There is a long distance between the audience and the original sound composition, which works in a similar way as a thread of messages generated by rumours; distortions in time that accumulate stories and misread or mistake messages.
This project is still in the composition stage. As soon as this stage is completed, the soprano singer performs in Cullalvera, (Cantabria, Spain) a Prehistorical cave of 12 km where there still is an active natural water system flooding the cave a few times a year.
As a result of this performance a sound installation will be created. It will be form by 10 sound channels in 10 different speakers displayed on the gallery space.
